MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The South Carolina State men were in fourth place and the women fifth after the first round of the Fairfield Spring Invitational being played Friday and Saturday (Mar. 6-7) at the Crown Park Golf Course in Myrtle Beach.
The Bulldogs carded an 18-hole team total of 306, just five strokes behind leader Jackson State, which was at 301 after the opening round in the 10-team field. In second place was Charleston Southern at 302, followed by Lewis University at 303, SC State, with host Fairfield (NJ) rounding out the top five with a 311.
Bulldog freshman Robert Cacho fired an even-par 72 and was in second place in the individual standings behind Logan Watts of Lewis, who carded a four-under par 68 on the Par 72, 6,477-yard course.
SC State's Hector Arroyave was tied for 12th with a 5-over 77. One stroke back and tied for 18th was the Bulldogs' Alejandro Bernardini with a 78. Also competing for the Bulldogs are senior Robert Biggers, who carded a 7-over par 79, and Javius Bing.
The SC State Lady Bulldogs had an opening round total of 358 in the five-team women's field. Sophomore Honesty Biggers, the sister of Robert Biggers, was in second place in the women's field after firing an 18-hole total of 78, 6-over par. Senior Addi McLaren was in 10th place with a 15-over par 87. Rounding out the Lady Bulldog team are Geneva Mackey, who had a 90 and Danielle Williams who was at 103.
Host Fairfield led the women's field with an 18-hole total of 333. The University of Toronto was second with a 351, followed by Holy Cross at 353, Albany (NY) at 354 and SC State at 358.
