SC State Goes 1-3 in the SC State 2008 Spikefest

Orangeburg, SC—The South Carolina State women's volleyball team went 1-3, this weekend in the 2008 SC State Spikefest. The Lady Bulldogs played two games on Friday and two games on Saturday.
                In their first match of the tournament, SC State (2-13) fell to Coastal Carolina, 3-0, (12-25, 15-25, 14-25). Freshman Peri Ligons recorded a match-high eight kills to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs. Senior Kisela Klöss recorded seven kills while freshman Lauren Harris picked up 11 digs in the loss.
                Coastal Carolina was led by Megan Bickford with six kills and Kelsie Mauck with 14 assists in the victory.
                SC State bounced back quickly as they defeated Hampton in its second match on Friday, 3-0, (25-18, 26-24, 25-20). Ligons once again led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with eight kills while freshman Bria Brimmer put up 22 assists and Harris recorded double-digit digs with 10.
                Hampton was led by Ebonie Vincent and Alyssa Jackson with 8 kills and 11 digs respectively.
                The Lady Bulldogs dropped a tough match to the Citadel, 3-1, (19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25), in its third match of the tournament on Saturday. SC State had two players to record a double-double while three players recorded double-digit kills and five players to pick up double-digit digs.
                Sophomore Jarne Gleaton and Ligons recorded a double-double with 16 kills-12 digs and 11 kills-16 digs respectively. Freshman Shabree Roberson also recorded double-digit kills with 13. Defensively, Freshman Brendell Studnicka picked up 12 digs, while Brimmer and Harris each had 11 digs in the match.
                The Citadel was led offensively by Jessica Maas and Amanda Beal who each put down nine kills while Jestila Tatum and Alyssa Holum picked up 13 digs in the match.
                In their final game of the tournament, SC State fell to Charleston Southern, 3-1, (17-25, 11-25, 26-24, 19-25). Gleaton recorded her second double-digit kill match of the day with 12. Ligons and Roberson contributed nine and eight kills respectively, while Brimmer put up 29 assists in the match.
                Charleston Southern was led by Amanda Hill and Emily Libertowski with 15 kills and 13 digs respectively.
                SC State will return to action, next Tuesday, September 23 when they travel to Baton Rouge, LA to take on Southern University. The Lady Bulldogs will then travel to Durham, NC next Friday-Saturday, Sept. 27-28 to participate in the North Carolina Central University Tournament. SC State will return home on Sunday, October 12 when they host Winston-Salem State University in non-conference match-up at 1 pm.
