Record its first MEAC Conference Win of the Season
Orangeburg, SC—The South Carolina State volleyball defeated Bethune-Cookman University, 3-2, (24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 20-30, 15-7), in its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up of the week. With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs pick up their first conference win of the season.
Despite playing its second five-game match in two days, SC State would not be outdone. Finding itself down by a game -- Bethune-Cookman took Game One, 30-24 -- SC State, (7-14, 1-1 MEAC), would not hang its head. Wildcats managed to take a seven-point advantage at 20-13, but the Lady Bulldogs came storming back, going on a 17-8 run to take Game Two, 30-28.
Game Three belonged to SC State, with the Lady Bulldogs jumping out to a 5-2 lead and never relinquishing it, eventually winning Game Three, 30-24.
Game Four was once again a point-for-point battle in the beginning. The Lady Wildcats took a one-point lead at 10-9 and never looked back, eventually winning Game Four 30-20, and forcing a Game Five.
SC State appeared to have Game Five in its control as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but the Lady Wildcats quickly tied the game at three all. The Lady Bulldogs then put together a string of points going up 8-4 on the changeover. A couple of kills by the Lady Bulldog capped with a Red Card on Bethune-Cookman's coach, which consequently gave an additional point to the Lady Bulldogs, sealed Game Five at 15-7 and the match at 3-2 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Senior Monique Walker and freshman Jarne Gleaton led SC State in kills with 15 and 14 respectively. Walker also led the way defensively for the Lady Bulldogs, recording a season-high 25 digs.
Kaiyana Johnson, Danielle Goodrum and Chelle Ticeson each recorded double-digit kills for the Lady Wildcats with 14, 13 and 10 respectively. Alyse Guzman recorded a game-high 28 digs to lead Bethune-Cookman defensively.
SC State will travel to Norfolk, Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 2 to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State in a MEAC contest. The Lady Bulldogs will host those same Spartans a little over a week later on Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Orangeburg.
