Orangeburg, SC— The SC State Lady Bulldogs fell to the College of Charleston, 59-79, in a non-conference match-up in Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
The College of Charleston (4-5) began the game on a 13-3 run but SC State (3-6) quickly put their offense into motion going on a 16-7 run over to pull within one, 19-20. The Cougars went on a 7-2 run with just over two minutes remaining to go up by six, 27-21. The Lady Bulldogs managed to pull the score to within two at the half, 25-27.
The second half belonged to College of Charleston as they went on a 9-3 run to go up by 13, 28-41, to open the half. The Lady Bulldogs could not recover as they went down by 22 late in the game, 77-55 and eventually falling by 20, 79-59.
Despite the double-digit loss, the Lady Bulldogs had three players to score in double-figures led by the current Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player-of-the Week, Sophilia Hipps with 17. Sophomore Marie Reid had recorded her first career double-double with 14 points-10 rebounds while Kristin Johnson contributed 11 points-eight rebounds in the loss.
Brooke Kotcella led all scorers with 20 points to lead the College of Charleston. Nikki Williams pulled in 11 rebounds in the victory.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action this Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. when they host Florida Atlantic University.
Game Notes: Junior forward Rasheeda Jones, who was scheduled to start the game, did not play due to illness. Junior Jenell Moore, the Lady Bulldogs leading rebounding played limited minutes due to illness. Both Jones and Moore are expected to be in the lineup on Saturday versus Florida Atlantic.
