The Department of Athletics at South Carolina State has named Jamaal Mayo, a veteran athletics administrator, as senior associate athletics director for external relations, effective immediately.
Arriving at SC State with nearly two decades of experience, Mayo will provide executive oversight for the department’s external units, including athletics development, corporate partnerships, ticket operations and fan engagement.
“We are excited to welcome Mr. Jamal Mayo to our university family and our athletics department,” said Oliver “Buddy” Pough, SC State athletics director. “Mr. Mayo has had extensive experience in intercollegiate athletics and higher education, driving revenue growth through expanded sponsorships and strengthening community partnerships.”
Mayo brings a proven record of leadership in athletics advancement and external relations. Most recently, he served in executive athletics roles at San José State University and North Carolina Central University, where he directed fundraising initiatives, corporate sponsorship development, ticket operations, and comprehensive external engagement strategies.
He previously served as director of intercollegiate athletics at Harris-Stowe State University, leading departmental growth initiatives focused on operational efficiency, revenue expansion, and academic achievement. Mayo began his administrative career at his alma mater, Western Carolina University, where he held multiple leadership roles in athletics administration.
A native of Hillsborough, North Carolina, Mayo earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Western Carolina University in 2003 and was a quarterback for the Catamounts football program.
Mayo resides in Orangeburg with his wife, Dr. Michelle Mayo, who serves as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Claflin University.
