Edward Halsell, a South Carolina State University alumnus, former professional golfer and accomplished golf instructor, was named head coach of the revived SC State women's golf program in 2026. He also serves as general manager of Hillcrest Golf Course through the university's joint management agreement with the City of Orangeburg.
A native of South Carolina, Halsell earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from South Carolina State University, where he competed as a member of the Bulldogs men's golf team. Following his collegiate career, he turned professional in 1995 and spent several years competing on the NGA Professional Golf Tour, Dakotas Tour and South America PGA Tour. During his professional playing career, he captured the Elmwood Golf Classic title in Watertown, South Dakota.
With more than 30 years of experience in the golf industry, Halsell has built an impressive resume as a player, instructor, entrepreneur and golf operations leader. After his professional playing career, he served as assistant golf professional at Stoneybrook West Golf Club and Stoneybrook at Heritage Harbour Golf Links before becoming head golf professional at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker, Georgia.
In 2009, Halsell founded the Ed Halsell Golf Academy, where he developed instructional programs for junior, amateur and competitive golfers. His commitment to player development and growing the game has helped numerous golfers improve their skills and achieve their goals on and off the course.
In addition to his golf instruction background, Halsell founded H&R Insurance Agency, gaining valuable experience in business management, strategic planning and client development. His diverse professional background provides a strong foundation for his leadership roles at South Carolina State University and Hillcrest Golf Course.
As head women's golf coach, Halsell is tasked with rebuilding the Bulldogs program while creating opportunities for student-athletes to excel academically and athletically. His vision focuses on developing a championship culture, mentoring student-athletes and expanding opportunities for young women in collegiate golf.
In his dual role as general manager of Hillcrest Golf Course, Halsell oversees daily operations, programming and community engagement efforts while helping strengthen the partnership between South Carolina State University and the City of Orangeburg.
Halsell's return to his alma mater represents a full-circle moment in a career dedicated to excellence in golf, leadership and service. He is committed to building a sustainable and competitive women's golf program that will serve as a source of pride for Bulldog Nation for years to come.
