Coach Dwight Evans
Dwight Evans is in his first year on the Bulldog coaching staff. He will be involved in all phases of the SC State basketball program especially on the recruiting side. Evans came to South Carolina State after serving one year as an assistant coach at Florida International University (FIU).
A veteran on the collegiate ranks, he spent 22 years as a successful coach. Evans has made six NCAA Tournament appearances as an assistant coach, including three during his second straight stint at Central Florida, where he spent six seasons.
At UCF, Evans assisted in recruiting efforts and the program won 122 games, which ranks nationally in the top-40 and second among all programs in the state of Florida. His specialty is working with post players, five UCF players earned all-conference allocates over his tenure. In the 2009 draft Jermaine Taylor was selected the 32nd pick by the Houston Rockets, Taylor was recruited by Evans.
Evans gained valuable experience as an assistant coach at South Alabama from 1999-2002. At USA, Evans helped lead the Jaguars to a pair of 20-win seasons as well as the SBC crown and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament.
As a collegian, Evans played at Birmingham Southern and served as a captain during the 1983-84 seasons. He earned all-conference and all-district allocades after the leading the panthers in rebounds and assist. He also was on the sidelines when his alma mater
claimed the NAIA National championship in 1995. In, 2002 Evans was inducted into the Birmingham-Southern Sports Hall of Fame.
Evans begin his coaching career at Missouri, working as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Norm Stewart from 1988-92. During Evans span at Missouri he helped the Tigers to a pair of Big Eight Tournament Titles and one regular-season crown. The Tigers earned three trips to the NCAA tournament and in 1989 advanced to the “Sweet 16”.
He then moved on to UCF for two seasons before returning home to his alma mater where the New York native worked for five seasons. During the Panthers 1994-95 national title run, Birmingham-Southern won 32-consective contests on its way to a 35-2 overall record. Evans helped build the program to a combined 141-25 mark and five appearances in the NAIA National Tournament.
Evans earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Birmingham-Southern in 1984.
