Lee Chambers is in his sixth year as an assistant with South Carolina State University football program. He joined the Bulldog staff in 2010 and will work with the running backs this year.
In 2010, Chambers worked with the tight ends and coached seventh-round NFL draft pick Johnny Culbreath, along with All-MEAC and All-American tackle Josh Harrison and tight end Antwanne Kerr. Harrison earned MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year award honors in 2010, while Culbreath went on to earn several All-American accolades as well as MEAC honors. Kerr, also earned All-MEAC First Team honors.
In 2014, he coached All-MEAC running back Jalen “Scoot” Simmons who rushed for over 1,000-yards after missing the entire 2013 campaign due a shoulder injury. Simmons became the first player to reach the 1000-yard plateau since SC State & MEAC All Time leading rusher Will Ford in 2009.
Chambers has coached in various capacities with the football program during his tenure at SC State. During the 2011 season, he coached the wide receivers and tight ends. In 2012, his main focus was the wide receivers and one of his players, Lennel Elmore, earned All-MEAC honors that season. In 2013, he coached the running backs and All-MEAC performer Justin Taylor.
Prior to becoming a part of Coach Buddy Pough’s staff, Chambers spent four seasons (2006-09) as an assistant at the University of Buffalo. During his time at Buffalo, he helped the team to the 2007 MAC East Championship. In 2008, Buffalo captured the MAC East Championship, the MAC Conference title and participated in the International Bowl.
While at Buffalo, Chambers helped develop several All-MAC players and Doak Walker List candidate James Starks who ended his career as Buffalo's all-time leading rusher and scorer. Starks was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Chambers also had coaching stints at Pikesville College in Kentucky and at Gardner-Webb, his alma mater.
Chambers was a three-year starter at Gardener-Webb and played on the team that won the 2003 Big South championship. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from GWU in 2005. He and Crystal reside in Orangeburg with their three kids Jordan, Kaitlyn and Braydn.
