Johnathan Williams joins South Carolina State Bulldogs coaching staff as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach.
He comes to South Carolina State from Benedict College where he served in a similar role as the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach.
During his time at Benedict, he was a part of an 11-1 SIAC Championship and Second Round Playoff appearance.
The offense boasted top rankings in multiple categories. Having the #1 ranking in Scoring, Rushing, 3rd Down and Redzone Offense in SIAC. Also, ranking #9 in 3rd Down Offense and #2 in Redzone Offense Nationally in Division II.
Also, the offense performed at an elevated level and exploding for over 5,000 yards of Total Offense in 2023, scoring in 92.8% of Red Zone trips (#2 in the nation), and converted 50.9% of 3rd downs (9th in the nation), while averaging 425.1 yards per game and 40 points per game and amassing an amazing 62 touchdowns, 31 rushing and 26 passing TD’s and passing for 267.9 yards per game and 157.2 rushing.
Several players earned All-Conference honors including Roger Smith (OL), Mitch Roming both were First Team Conference selections, along with running back Deondra Duehart was named 2nd Team All-SIAC.
Williams was invited to back-to-back HBCU Legacy Bowls as the Offensive Coordinator, where he organized the playbook to installs, organized staff meetings and presented installs to both staff and team throughout week, scripted practices working all phases of game 1st down, 3rd down, redzone and pass and run situations, lastly was the offensive coordinator and play caller during the game, ending in a 10-3 victory over Team Gaither. The offense totaled 190 yds of offense with the only touchdown of the game and 184 yards passing.
Prior to Benedict, he served as Quarterback Coach at Southern University.
He worked directly with Offensive Coordinator Eric Dooley, developing game plans, including planning the game against Virginia University of Lynchburg, a 51-7 Victory, which saw Southern finish with 615 offensive yards, with over 200 yards rushing and over 400 yards passing, with a passing efficiency of 77%. He coached quarterback BeSean McCray, who was the fifth-rated quarterback in the SWAC and helped the Jaguards to the SWAC championship.
Williams played a significant role Southern's championship run, as the offense was ranked in the top five of nearly every offensive category: Passing Offense (196.2 ypg); Rushing Offense (201.9 ypg); Scoring Offense (31.7 ppg); Total Offense (398.1 ypg).
He spent the 2018-2021 seasons in the same role at Prairie View A&M University. In his first year as quarterbacks coach of the Panthers, Williams proved his ability as Prairie View A&M boasted the SWAC's third-ranked passing attack despite injuries that necessitated the use of three players for significant stretches. In all, the Panthers' passing prowess helped Prairie View A&M field the SWAC's top-ranked offense for the second season in a row, with Prairie View A&M ranking fourth in total offense and 24th nationally in passing offense.
Additionally, he served as USA National Team Coach for the 14U group.
A former standout signal-caller for Grambling State University (2011-15), Williams arrived at Prairie View in 2018 as Assistant Quarterbacks Coach. That season, the Panthers led the SWAC in scoring and held the top-ranked passing attack in the conference. Williams helped develop Jalen Morton into the league's premier dual-threat, as Morton ranked second in passing and fifth in rushing with Williams' tutelage.
Versed in the concepts of the Spread, Air Raid, Pro-Style and West Coast offenses, Williams starred as one of the most prolific passers in the nation and in the history of Grambling State football prior. Williams earned All-SWAC honors twice (2014-15). Williams led the SWAC in every notable passing category during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and in 2015 he led the FCS in touchdown passes while being named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year after guiding the team to the SWAC Championship Game. Williams was named MVP of the Bayou Classic on three separate occasions.
Williams earned his Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology from Grambling State University in 2015.
