LORRY H. DAWKINS TRACK AND FIELD FACILITY
The Lorry H. Dawkins Track and Field Facility opened circa 1994, replacing a track that was housed inside Oliver C. Dawson Stadium and was measured in yards. The facility, which was renovated in 2001 at a cost of $700,000, features a 400-meter track and a large area for field events. It is located behind Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
The facility, which has played host to some of the nation’s most dynamic track stars, features a popular polyurethane rubber surface with eight lanes. The track is constructed so that both running and field events can be run in either direction, depending on the wind. A number of outstanding track and field events have been hosted at the site, including the Robert “Jet” Johnson SCSU Relays.
Currently, there are provisions to re-surface the track and add seating at the facility, which is named for the late SCSU Hall of Famer Lorry H. Dawkins, an outstanding performer on the gridiron for the Bulldogs and a very successful high school coach and administrator.
