ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Since arriving at South Carolina State as a transfer from Bethune-Cookman, senior standout
Christian Washington has established himself as one of the premier track and field athletes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Jacksonville, Florida, native made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs in the long jump and heptathlon, rewriting the record books with personal-best performances, capturing a MEAC championship and earning a berth to the NCAA East Regional Championships. Through his relentless work ethic and championship success, Washington has cemented his legacy as one of South Carolina State's most accomplished track and field athletes.
Q: What personal goals in track and field did you accomplish this season?
A: One of my biggest personal goals was to become a MEAC champion and be one of the team's top scorers. I accomplished both by winning the MEAC Indoor Long Jump championship and placing third in the heptathlon during the indoor season.
Q: What was one of the biggest challenges you faced as a member of the team?
A: One of the biggest challenges was learning to trust and depend on my teammates. Winning a championship isn't about one person—it's about everyone doing their part. You have to trust your teammates to score points in their events and contribute to the team's overall success.
Q: What would you tell your younger self?
A: I would tell my younger self that all the late nights and hard practices are worth it. The rewards that come later make every sacrifice worthwhile. Most importantly, I would say to thank God for every opportunity and every door He has opened.
Q: What is the best advice you've received throughout your career?
A: The best advice I've received is to keep going because the moment you stop, someone else is working to take your place. Staying motivated and continuing to improve is what keeps you moving forward.
Q: Who is your toughest critic after a track performance?
A: That's an easy one—my mom. She's always honest about my performances and makes sure I know where I can improve. I love her for it because that kind of accountability is something every athlete needs.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you're not competing in track and field?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, getting out and enjoying life, and going on little adventures. If I'm not doing that, I'm probably catching up on some sleep.
Q: If you weren't competing in track and field, what sport would you be playing?
A: I'd be playing football.
Q: What's a hidden talent that most people don't know about?
A: I know how to play the ukulele.
Q: Who do you admire most in life?
A: I admire my grandfather the most. He taught me the value of hard work, perseverance and never giving up. He always reminded me that life will keep moving forward, with or without you, so it's important to keep pushing through every challenge.
