Off the Field: with Demir “DJ” Boldin

ORANGEBURG, SC--During Bulldog Spring Football, we had a chance to sit down with Wide Receivers' Coach Demir "DJ" Boldin. Boldin is in his first season on the SC State football coaching staff. He comes to Bulldog Country after serving as the Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Wide Receivers Coach at Lake Erie College (D-II) for the past two years. As a head coach, he helped the Storm win the '2022 Pride and Passion Rivalry Trophy' against Walsh University for the first time in program history. Boldin guided nine (9) players to First, Second, and Third Team All-Conference honors and had 44 student-athletes receive Academic All-Conference Awards. Before becoming Head Coach, Boldin served as the Wide Receivers coach and Co-Special Teams Coordinator at Lake Erie College during the 2021 football season. As Wide Receivers Coach, Boldin produced a First-Team All-GMAC wide receiver three years in a row (2021-23), a back-to-back 1,000-yard-wide receiver in (2021-22), and an All-American receiving tight end in 2021. Prior to starting his coaching career, Boldin played wide receiver at Wake Forest University. He earned a spot on the Sporting News ACC All-Freshman Team in 2005 and achieved First-Team All-ACC honors as a senior, after recording 81 receptions, 848 yards, and three touchdowns during his senior season in 2008. To see Boldin's complete bio, visit www.scsuathletics.com

Q: What made you decide to coach for South Carolina State?
A: I was given the opportunity by Coach (Chennis) Berry, and I've always wanted to experience coaching at an HBCU.

Q: What would you say was one of the biggest challenges transitioning from a player to a coach?
A: One of the challenges is not having the adrenaline I used to have as a player on gameday anymore because as a coach I need to be calm, cool, and collected.

Q: What would you tell your younger self as a player that you would as a coach?
A: Football and life go hand-and-hand. Use the principles gained from football earlier in life to gain an advantage.

QWhat was the best advice given to you as a coach?
A: It is always about the players.

 Q. What is the biggest challenge you face today as a coach?
A: Biggest challenge would be being considered for positions that I am qualified for.

Q: What is a misconception about coaches' society always claim?
A: The biggest misconception is that all we do is coach football. Football is probably 10 percent of what we do.

Q: When I am not coaching, I am doing?
A: Spending time with my family.

Q: If I wasn't coaching football, I would coach what sport?

A: I would coach Baseball.

Q: A hidden talent I have no one knows about is?
  A: I am ambidextrous.

Q: The person I admire the most in life? A: My mother.

Q: My favorite quote in life?
A:  Reputation is what people think of you, Character is what you are.

Q: If I can spend time with one person dead or alive it would be?
  A:  My grandfather.
