Mason Kidd threw for two touchdowns as the Garnet team defeated the White team 46-7 in South Carolina State's annual spring game held Saturday in Orangeburg.
Kidd, a transfer quarterback from Northern Illinois, opened the game with back-to-back scoring drives completing a three-yard touchdown pass to
Keshawn Toney and a 20-yard touchdown pass to
Shamontae Burgess. Kidd would be named Most Improved Quarterback at the award ceremony following the game.
All three quarterbacks would lead scoring drives as
Andre Washington rushed for a 75-yard touchdown for the Garnet team, and Prometheus Franklin completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to
Jordan Smith for the White team's lone score.
"Basically, these young men have had an interview every day," Berry said of spring practice. "I thought our (players) got better each week. When you only get 15 opportunities you can't waste any time, these (players) come out every day with their hard hats on ready to go to work."
Berry has consistently talked this spring about building the foundation of a program rather than just a good football team.
"We first wanted to set our culture," Berry said. "That consists of discipline and accountability, and our (players) have bought in 100-percent. We're trying to be 1-0 every day."
Transfer running backs Deondra Duehart (Benedict) and Kazarius Adams (Georgia State) each added rushing touchdowns in Saturday's spring game. Berry said he and his staff will be mining the portal when it opens this week.
"We're going to do some recruiting," Berry said. "When that portal opens on the 16th we're going to be in it, but whoever we bring in still has to follow the process and be the right fit. There have been a whole lot of championships won at SC State, and we know we have a strong foundation."
When Berry was hired, many SC State fans had a sense of optimism about the program. Berry led Benedict to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, and many feel he can do the same in Orangeburg.
"Bulldog tenacity is real," Berry said of the fanbase. "They see that Block "S" and they know what time it is. (The fans) come with so much energy and enthusiasm from our younger alums to our 'more seasoned' alums. It's amazing, and I'm grateful to be the head football coach (at SC State)."
