Bulldogs Hold Off Coppin State 77-65

ORANGEBURG, SC—Four Bulldogs scored double figures with Caleb McCarty scoring a season-high 15 points and six rebounds to lead South Carolina State to a, 77-65, win over Coppin State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play Monday (Feb.5) inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Michael Teal added 14 points a six rebounds, while teammates Wilson Dubinsky chipped 12 and Atiba Taylor with 11.

South Carolina State improved to 8-15 overall, 4-3 in the MEAC, while Coppin State falls to 6-16 overall, 2-4 in the league.

The Bulldogs posted their biggest margin of the first-half 21, to take a commanding 45-24 lead during intermission.

SCSU built a commanding 22-point advantage 53-31 lead at the 12:23 mark in the second half. Coppin State battled back to cut the lead to 10, 61-71, off a three-pointer Malik Battle. The Bulldogs held off the late rally to come away with the much-needed victory.

Despite a game-high 18 turnovers, SCSU led in several categories including bench points (46-28), blocks (4-1), second chance points (13-9) and rebounds (43-21).

Coppin State was led by Malik Battle with 18, followed by Ryan Archey with 17 in the loss.

"We can't be relaxed no matter how the game is going," said head coach Erik Martin. "I told my team I am happy with the win, but we need to finish the game strong moving forward."

NEXT UP: South Carolina State will host Chicago State in non-conference play Saturday (Feb.10) in a 4 p.m. start inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
