SC State Set To Host Tennessee Tech Saturday

(Family/Community/Breast Cancer Awareness Day)

ORANGEBURG, SC-- SC State Bulldogs (2-3, 0-0 MEAC) and the visiting Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech (1-4, 0-0 Ohio Valley Conference) of Cookeville, TN will battle in nonconference matchup between at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium and Willie Jeffries Field. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs and Coach Pough are coming off a big 56-6 win over Div. III  Virginia Lynchburg last week. A win today would even the Bulldogs' record at 3-3 after an 0-3 start. Tennessee Tech, perennially one of the ranked teams in FCS, lost 23-0 to Lindenwood last week to fall to 1-4 on the season. Nevertheless, the Golden Eagles are expected to be a formidable foe for SC State, according to Pough.

"Tennessee Tech has struggled record-wise, but you wouldn't know it by looking at them on tape. They are very strong on the defensive side of the ball  and have some outstanding offensive players, including two-highly-skilled  running backs (Marcus Knight and Justin Pegues). The offensive line is good and if they figure out the QB situation, they will be pretty solid. They will challenge us."

As for his Bulldogs, Pough said last week's win was welcomed. We were a big favorite and I was glad to see we got off to a quick start (28-0 after one quarter). We made some changes in our starting offense and also had a chance to look at some of our young players to get them involved."

Rushing by Committee
The Bulldogs continue to use several running backs in their ground attack. Last week, no less than five carried the pigskin for the SC State rushing game. Freshmen Jawarn Howell and Kacy Fields continue to lead the way. Howell has rushed 44 times for 247 yards, while Fields has 177 yards and two TDs in 42 attempts. Redshirt freshmen Josh Shaw (35 rushes, 157 yds.), and Tyler Smith-Gaffney (16 rushes, 102 yds., 1TD) are close behind. Last week, another redshirt freshman -Demetri Simmons – got into the mix, played well, and will most likely remain in the rotation.
