MEAC Women's Bracket
CARY, N.C., April 28, 2022 – Three women's quarterfinal matches were on the docket for the first day of the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championships on Thursday at the Cary Tennis Park.
Morgan State and North Carolina Central were victorious in the early morning matches, while South Carolina State also took its quarterfinal match.
Match 1: North Carolina Central 3, Delaware State 0
In a match where both teams were down to four players, the No. 5 seed Eagles shut out No. 4 Delaware State.
The Eagles and Hornets split their two doubles matches, which meant no doubles point was awarded. Once in singles play, Anaiah Jones blanked Isyss Jones 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, while Kennedy Hill took a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Baluck Deang at the No. 1 slot.
NCCU (5-15) clinched the match when Isabelle Exsted took the first set 7-6 (7-2) and dominated the second set 6-1 over Eva Golembiovski.
Match 2: Morgan State 4, Coppin State 0
A pair of 6-1 doubles wins – at No. 2 (Hannah Smith / Anabel Aran) and No. 3 (Stefania Moysiadi / Nolwenn Cardoso) – got the Bears off on the right foot, giving them a 1-0 lead over the rival Eagles.
Morgan State (9-10-1), the No. 2 seed, then dominated at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Asmara Rose, playing at No. 6, started things off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mackenzie Jones, while at No. 5, Aran defeated Megan Etienne 6-2, 6-1.
Averiana Mitchell had the clincher at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2 over Lucia Placidi.
Match 3: South Carolina State 4, Norfolk State 0
Defending champion – and No. 3 seed – South Carolina State took quick control of its quarterfinal match, winning a pair of doubles matches 6-2 to claim the first point.
Lasya Patnaik and
Nalanda Silva were victorious at No. 1, while
Teodora Vujicic and Anabel Aguilar won at No. 3.
In singles play, Vujicic defeated Amber Fuller 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Silva won 6-2, 6-1 over Andrea Barcenas at No. 3 and
Ikram Rassif was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Niya Grant at No. 5.
For the semifinals, North Carolina Central will take on top seed Howard on Friday, while Morgan State will face off against the Bulldogs.
