BALTIMORE, MD – Junior transfers
Jacquece Alston and Haniaya Moton tossed in 21 and 19 points, respectively, to lift the SC State women to a 71-60 overtime win over host Coppin State Saturday in the MEAC opener for both teams.
De'Mean Bond was also in double figures for SC State with 11 points and six rebounds.
Jayah Hicks added nine points and a team-high eight boards in the win.
The contest was a meeting between two struggling teams as Coppin entered the contest 0-12, while the Lady Bulldogs were 1-11 on the season. Coach
Audra Smith's team had not tasted victory since its opener in November against Charleston Southern.
"I'm extremely proud of the fight my team showed tonight," Smith said. We led for most of the game, but fell behind by 5-6 late but battled back to force overtime and eventually come away with the win.
We had been struggling from the foul line all season, but stepped up and made 80 percent (25-31) tonight and that was the difference in the gall game.
Moton started the game with a 3-pointer but the host Lady Eagles went on a 701 run to go ahead 7-4 with 6:47 left in the opening period. The game was tied at 9-9 before the Lady Bulldogs took a 17-13 lead after one.
Bond got the first basket of the second period for a 19-13 SC State advantage before the Lady Eagles came back to tie the contest at 26-all but a steal and layup by Alston sent SC State to the locker room ahead 28-26.
SC State built a 39-33 advantage in the first five minutes of the third stanza but Coppin chipped away at the lead and tied it at 39-all before SC State got the final basket of the half to go to the locker room up 41-39.
Coppin State used a 11-4 run to start the final period to build a 50-45 edge 3:22 to play. The game was tied twice after that, including 57-57 at the end of regulation.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 61-57 lead in overtime with 4:05 to play on two Moton free throws but Coppin closed the gap to 61-60 on an inside basket by Aliyah Lawson with 2:57 remaining but that would be the last points for the host as SC State closed the game on a 10-0 run to claim the win.
Coppin was lead by Chance Grahma and Jalynda Salley with 14 points each. Lawson and Alexandria Hamilton added 13 each in the loss.
