Taylor Brown recorded the games only double-double with game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead South Carolina State to an, 57-51, victory over Bethune-Cookman Saturday (March. 2
nd ) at Moore Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs avenged an early season loss, improving to 15-14 overall, 8-7 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 17-10 overall, 10-5 in the league.
"This was a very good road for our team and our program, "said SC State head coach Audry Smith. "Bethune-Cookman is a very good team and ranked among one the top teams in the league, so for us to come in here and win against this tough crowd tells you a lot about how focused they were today."
"I am really proud of the our defense played holding BC-U to just seven points in the 2
nd and 3
rd quarter and limiting a player like Angel Golden . She ended up with 17 points but majority of that came late in the game when we got relaxed." said Smith."
Senior guard
Rhein Beamon added 17 points and five rebounds, while All-American Angel Golden ended the day with a season-low 17 points in the loss.
South Carolina State totally dominated the first-half leading 33-19 during intermission. The Lady Bulldogs built their biggest lead of the day 22, 23-45, off a layup by senior guard
Jakayvea Akins followed by a 3-pointer by Beamon late in the third quarter.
Golden tossed in 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull the Lady Wildcats within four, 51-47, with 0:32 second remaining in intermission. Taylor converted on key free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory for South Carolina State.
Taylor finished 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, while Beamon was 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Camary Harris added nine points and 10 rebounds for BC-U in the loss.
Next up the Lady Bulldogs will play their regular season finale at home versus Savannah State Thursday (March. 7
th) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
