DURHAM, NC—The South Carolina State Bulldogs looking to keep their hopes alive Saturday (Nov. 16
th) on the road, when they take on host the Eagles of North Carolina Central.
South Carolina State has been operating with a two-quarterback system all year, but freshman quarterback
Corey Fields might have ended that debate in the Bulldogs' 62-21 win over Howard this past Saturday. Fields was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after completing 18 of 29 passes for 333 yards and a program-record seven touchdowns. He tied Florida A&M's Pat Bonner for second in MEAC history with seven touchdowns in a single game. He was also named the STATS FCS Freshman of the Week.
De'Montrez Burroughs was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week after catching seven passes for 140 yards and a school-record five touchdowns, and with the win, South Carolina State is back in the MEAC race, tied atop the standings with Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina A&T State. North Carolina Central's Davius Richard threw for 384 yards, which was the sixth-most in school history, and three touchdowns in the Eagles' 38-21 loss to Norfolk State this past Saturday. The Eagles have won four of the last six meetings between the schools, including the last three. The Eagles beat the Bulldogs 21-17 last season in Orangeburg, S.C.
POUGH'S THOUGHTS: "It's good to be back in the race but our goal is to win one game at a time, and we will see how things end up. NCCU is a very good football team and their record doesn't indicate the talent this football has shown. We will have our hands full especially on the road."
BULLDOG BITES: Senior wide receiver
De'Montrez Burroughs is on the brink of reaching yet a few more milestones this season. Burroughs needs two (2) more touchdown receptions to break the record of touchdowns in a season, currently held by Freddie Solomon at 13 and career touchdowns at 20. He is just 503-yards shy of become the All-Time Career Reception Leader with 1,829-yards. The record is currently held by former All-American standout Tyler McDonald at 2,331.
NEXT UP: South Carolina State will wrap up the regular season on the road in Norfolk, VA against a scrappy Norfolk State Spartan team at Dick Price Stadium. Kickoff is 2 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN 3 on the MEAC Digital Network.
