BALTIMORE, MD – South Carolina State got a double-double from both
Taylor Brown and
Rhein Beamon and enjoyed a huge advantage on the boards in earning its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season, 75-59 over host Coppin State (1-15 overall, 1-3 MEAC) Monday night.
Brown, who recorded his second double-double in as many games, poured in 20 points and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldog effort. Beamon added 18 points and 11 boards for SC State, which had a total of four players in double figures.
Esther Udonsi, one of the team's top shooters a year ago, broke out of a season-long slump with 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and
Kemoni Jenkins, one of two Lady Bulldogs in early foul trouble, added 10 in the victory which lifted SC State to 8-9 on the season and 1-2 in the MEAC.
Dashanique Peterson, pressed into her most minutes of the season due to the foul problems of
Jaquanna Murray, added six points and 12 boards for SC State, which had a 52-24 edge in rebounds
"It (the win) was a total team effort," said elated Lady Bulldog head coach
Audra Smith. "We were short-handed, without starting point guard
Jakayvea Akins (knee) and
Kyesha Lewis (who suffered a concussion in the team's Saturday loss at Morgan State), then both Murray and Jenkins got into early foul trouble."
"But we had so many players to step up their effort to get us this victory. (Rhein) Beamon, who handled the point guard duties, and
Taylor Brown played the entire 40 minutes, just great efforts. Esther (Udonsi) finally gave us a solid game. She is one of our best shooters but has been inconsistent most of the year but she had a great fourth quarter when she had three 3-pointers and 11 points. And, of course Peterson played the most minutes she played all season because of the fouls on Murray."
The Lady Bulldogs led 33-24 at the half before the Lady Eagles used a 14-8 run to start the third quarter to slice the lead to 41-39 on a layup by Brooke Fields with 5:05 on the third-period clock. Peterson got a follow shot and Brown a layup to push the SC State lead to six, 45-39, at the 3:22. The Lady Bulldogs went on to 52-44 lead after three.
SC State got the first four points of the final period for a 56-44 edge when Udonsi scored on a break with 9:11 to play. Following a basket by Coppin's Chance Graham that closed the gap to 56-46. Smith's team used a 10-4 run to build a 66-50 advantage with just 2:20 on the clock, sealing the win. The Lady Bulldogs' biggest lead was 19 points, 73-54, with just under a minute remaining.
The Lady Eagles were led by Fields with 24 points and Chance with 22.
SC State returns to action Jan. 19 when the Lady Bulldogs host Howard in a league doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
