ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's basketball teams will open the 2018-19 season this week.
The Bulldogs host Brevard College Tuesday (Nov. 6
th) in their home-opener at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in a 7 p.m. tip-off, while the Lady Bulldogs hit the road Wednesday (Nov. 7
th) to take on Radford University in a 7 p.m. start in Radford, VA.
South Carolina State men's team picked 10
th in the MEAC Preseason Poll, including junior forward Damani Applewhite being selected to the All-MEAC Third Team. Head coach
Murray Garvin who is in his sixth season at the helm returns nine (9) letter winners and welcomes five (5) newcomers.
On the women's side, first-year head coach
Audra Smith and the Lady Bulldogs were selected 11
th in the MEAC Preseason Poll. Smith returns seven (7) veterans and welcomes six (6) newcomers to her squad this upcoming season.
Applewhite returns as the leader for the Bulldogs averaging 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds last season, while lone senior point guard Janai Ranyer-Powell (8.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg) returns as the floor general. Senior guard
Kemoni Jenkins is the top returner for the Lady Bulldogs averaging 10.0 points and 5.2 rebounds and
Kyesha Lewis adds 9.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg.
