Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – Kemoni Jenkins tossed in 16 points and tied for team rebounding honor with eight but South Carolina State's inside play and performance at the charity stripe was its downfall as the Lady Bulldogs fell 65-55 to Morgan State Monday.
Kyesha Lewis finished with 11 points and
Bryeasha Blair added 10 points and eight boards in the loss, in which SC State missed 13 free throws and almost as many layups.
"We really had so many missed opportunities inside," said Lady Bulldog head coach Doug Robertson. That appears to be a recurring theme for us…missed layups. And, we also had a poor-shooting night from the free throw line. We have to keep fighting and try to get better. We still have a lot of basketball left."
The setback, which was the second in as many outings for SC State, dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 7-13 and 2-6 in the MEAC. Morgan, which snapped a four-game losing streak, improved to 11-10 and 4-4 in the league.
The host Bears, who trailed by three at the half, 32-29, outscored SC State 18-7 in the third quarter to build a 47-39 lead after three quarters. Morgan increased its lead to 50-40 with just over eight minutes to play before SC State rallied to close the gap to 50-48 on a short jumper by
Chantel Williams with 4:58 remaining.
But the host scored eight of the next 10 points to build a 58-50 lead, seizing control of the game. The closest the Lady Bulldogs came after that was six points, the last time 56-50 with just 1:08 remaining.
The Lady Bulldogs, after trailing 16-15 after the opening period, outscored the Lady Bears 17-13 in the second quarter to build a 32-29 advantage at the half.
Lewis had 10 of her total in the half, connecting on all three of her attempts from the field, including 2-2 from three-point range and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Jenkins added eight points, hitting 4-6 attempts.
