Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State Bulldogs had four players in double-figures with sophomore guard
Ed Stephens leading the way, tossing in a team-high 23 points to give the Bulldogs a ,88-83, victory over Coppin State Saturday (Feb.6) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Stephens was a threat from behind the arc, connecting on 6-of-8 three-pointers on the day. Senior guard/forward
Gabriel McCray produced a solid performance on both ends with 19 points and nine (9) rebounds, while junior guard
Eric Eaves finished with 18.
Sophomore forward
Tashombe Riley provided a key force down the stretch in the front court with 10 points and six (6) rebounds in the win.
Despite, a game-high 18 turnovers the Bulldogs dominated in several categories such as rebounds (37-27), points in the paint (30-22), and points off the bench 36-17.
Coppin State also, had four players in double-figures with Christian Kessee scoring a game-high 27 points, Trevon Seymoure was second with 14 points and nine (9) rebounds, while Blake Simpson added 13. Keith Shivers chipped 10 points, five rebounds, three assist and three steals in the loss for the Eagles.
South Carolina State improves to 13-11 overall, 8-2 in the MEAC, while Coppin State falls to 5-17 overall, 3-6 in the league. With the win, the Bulldogs move into a first-place tie with Hampton for the top-ranked spot in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
South Carolina State defeated top-ranked Hampton 67-62 (1/25/16) in Hampton, VA earlier this season to secure the tie-breaker.
The Bulldogs are 8-0 at home this season and face Morgan State on Monday night (Feb.8) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader. Tipoff for the women begin at 5:30 p.m., with the men following immediately in a 7:30 p.m. start.
