Coleman Leads SC State to 56-43 Win Over Savannah State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior forward Jasmine Coleman scored a team-high 11 points to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 56-43 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Coleman, one of four senior players honored in the Senior Day Ceremony following the game, added six rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 23 minutes.

Toni Grier, Amber Howard and Jazzmine Johnson were the other senior honored.

SC State (10-12, 6-6 MEAC) started off fast and kept Savannah State (7-16, 4-8 MEAC) scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the game. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs led 14-9. SC State went up by 10, 19-9, after a layup by Grier with 7:15 left in the second quarter.

The Lady Tigers cut the lead to just two points after scoring eight straight in the following two minutes and 52 seconds. A layup by Taylor-Ashley Shaw at the 4:05 mark got Savannah State within one (20-19), but SC State went on a 6-2 run to go into halftime with a 26-21 lead.

Savannah State scored the first three baskets of the third quarter to tie the game at 26-all with 7:29 to go. But the Lady Bulldogs got six consecutive points from Howard, Grier and Bria Ratliff to go up 32-26. By the end of the period, SC State was ahead by 11 points (43-32).

The Lady Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead for the entire fourth quarter and were able to record their 10th win of the season.

Jeremica Edwards paced Savannah State with 13 points, while Tiyonda Davis had game-highs 13 boards and three blocks.

Grier finished with eight points and six rebounds for SC State. JuQuanna Murray also grabbed six rebounds.

SC State travels to Princess Anne, Md. next Saturday to take on Maryland Eastern Shore in a 2 p.m. matchup.
