Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. –The South Carolina State men's basketball team suffered their first home loss of the season in a 60-57 setback to Savannah State Saturday (Feb.13) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
South Carolina State falls to 14-12 overall, 9-3 in the MEAC while Savannah State improves to 10-13 overall, 6-6 in the league.
Junior guard
Eric Eaves led the Bulldogs with a game-high 16 points, while senior guard/forward
Gabriel McCray and junior guard
Greg Mortimer tossed in 11 each in the loss.
The lead changed hands late when Manassa hit a layup for a 53-52 lead, Mortimer put the Bulldogs back up on a layup before Dexter McClanahan converted a layup.
Sophomore guard
Ed Stephens made two free throws to give South Carolina State the lead and Manassa scored again to give Savannah State a 57-56 lead with 3:48 to play. Neither team scored a field goal from then on, nor did the Tigers win it at the free - throw line.
Savannah State was led by Troyce Manassa with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks, while Javaris Jenkins added 15 and Chris Martin chipped in 11 for the win.
SC State also celebrated "Senior Night" with four student-athletes from the women's team and three from the men being saluted and highlighted for their achievements on the court throughout their collegiate careers.
Next up the Bulldogs it the road for a two-game swing beginning with Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday (Feb.20) in a 4 p.m. Tipoff. Followed by rounding up everything in Washington, DC against Howard on Monday (Feb.22) in a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
