MBB: Bulldogs Take On Tigers In Key MEAC Showdown

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's basketball team will be going for their 10th straight home victory Saturday (Feb. 13) when they host the visiting Tigers of Savannah State in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff is 2 p.m. for the women, with the men following immediately afterwards in a 4 p.m. start time. 
 
Fans who cannot attend the game in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, can listen to the MEAC showdown on 93.7 FM the People's Station and the official station of SC State Athletics, with Paul Harris on the air for the play-by-play. There will be no video or live stats available.

THE SERIES: SSU and S.C. State will meet for the 29th time in the series. SCSU leads the series 18-10; however SSU has won eight of nine the last nine meetings against the Bulldogs. The Tigers are also the last team to beat SCSU in Orangeburg. The Bulldogs have not lost a home game since falling to SSU, 68-57, on February 28, 201

The MATCHUP: SC State (14-11 overall, 9-2 MEAC) is coming off back-to-back MEAC road wins over Coppin State (88-83) and Morgan State (82-78). The Bulldogs are currently tied for 1st in the league standings with Hampton.  Bulldogs are in double-figures with junior guard Eric Eaves leading with way with 16.8 points, and sophomore guard Ed Stephens's chips in 13.9.  Senior guard/forward Gabriel McCray tosses in 11.6 points, while grabbing 4.8 rebounds. All-MEAC Preseason forward/center Darryl Palmer is the leader on the boards with 6.1 and scoring 8.4 per game. SC State is grabbing almost 33.4 rebounds a game, while forcing over 13.3 turnovers. 

Despite their record, the Savannah State Tigers are one of the more talented teams in the conference. SSU is coming off two-game winning streak with wins over Coppin State and Morgan State. Savannah State is led by Troyce Manassa with 13.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing. Chris Martin is second with 11.7 ppg, while Lenjo Kilo is the leader in the boards with 5.4 rebounds and 9.5 points.

BULLDOG NOTE:  South Carolina State will be celebrating "Senior Day" on Saturday. Three student-athletes from the men in senior's Darryl Palmer, Luka Radvoic and Gabriel McCray will be honored, along with four on the women's side in Toni Grier, Amber Howard, Jasmine Coleman and Jazzmine Johnson.
