Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team defeated South Carolina State 73-67 in overtime on Monday night at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Upstate (5-6) led 58-56 with 1:29 left in regulation. A pair of free throw by
Brittany Drumgoole tied the game at 58-all at the 36-second mark, but Drumgoole's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced of the back of the iron to force an extra period.
The Spartans scored first in overtime on a layup by DeNisha Swain with 4:04 left. SC State (3-4) took a momentary lead after a 3-pointer and three-point play by Drumgoole, but Upstate hit three straight treys to take a 69-64 lead. The Lady Bulldogs managed just three points in the final 55 seconds which came on Drumgoole's third 3-pointer of the night.
The game was close during the first four periods. Upstate led 17-16 after the first quarter and had a 31-28 lead going into halftime. At the end of the third quarter, the Spartans were up 41-38, and they had their largest lead of the game (eight points) early in the fourth quarter.
Swain led Upstate with 19 points and eight assists. Raven Jefferson and Bailey Wensler also scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Drumgoole was SC State's leading scorer with a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
JaQuanna Murray recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also added a game-high three blocks.
Jahmia Bradley finished with 14 points and nine boards, but the Lady Bulldogs' leading scored
Bryeasha Blair was held to just four points.
The Lady Bulldogs begin a four-game road swing this weekend when they take on Coastal Carolina on Friday and Clemson on Sunday.
