Richardson Pours In Team-High 25 In Win Over Voorhees

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—Junior guard James "JJ" Richardson tossed in a team-high 25 points to lead South Carolina State to a, 90-85, victory over visiting Voorhees Wednesday (Nov. 30) night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

"I have to give credit to Voorhees they came in here and made it tough for us tonight, "said SC State head coach Murray Garvin. "We got behind early on but once we got settled and played defense we were able to get back into the game."

Richardson connected on 4-of-8 three-pointers, while junior's Tashombe Riley and Ed Stephens added 13 each in the win. Riley also finished with seven rebounds.
Voorhees took an early nine-point lead, 25-34 on a pair of free-throws by senior forward Denzel Famble at the 5:49 mark in the first-half. A jumper by freshman Ian Kinard cut the lead to seven, 31-38 with 2:59 left in intermission. The Tigers led 45-35 at halftime.

The Tigers roared out in the second-half opening their biggest lead of the night 18, 50-68, at the 12:18 mark. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stephens and Richardson cut the lead to three, 71-74 with 6:57 remaining in regulation.

SC State's defense prove to be too much down the stretch for Voorhees, forcing the Tigers to a game-high 12 turnovers on the night. The Bulldogs capitalized off every mistake getting 23 points from bench play and outscoring the Tigers 12-6 in second chance points.

A long range three-pointer by Stephens with 2:52 remaining gave the Bulldogs their first lead out the night. Senior guard/forward Greg Mortimer's baseline jumper with 1:51 left in the game to give the Bulldogs the momentum they needed to hold on to a 90-85 victory at home.

Mortimer finished with 10 points, while teammates Eric Eaves (six rebounds) and Kinard (five rebounds each chipped in nine each.

South Carolina State returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 on the road against ACC powerhouse the University of Miami. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
