Amber Howard had a team-high 14 points, while teammate
Toni Grier finished with 13 points and six rebounds to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 60-52 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Joe Echols Hall.
SC State (8-9, 4-3 MEAC) was down 15-12 after the first quarter, but outscored NSU (0-17, 0-7 MEAC) 27-7 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 39-22 advantage.
Both teams scored a combined 13 points in the third period, but the Lady Bulldogs still had a 12-point lead at the beginning of the final period.
The Spartans slowly chipped away at the lead and pulled within two, 45-43, with 6:21 left in the game after a pair of free throws by Siobhan Beslow. Kayla Roberts scored eight straight points for NSU to bring the score to 54-51, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to win the game.
Roberts scored a game-high 16 points for NSU, while Beslow finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards. Dominique Harper also scored in double digits with 10 points.
For SC State,
Brittany Drumgoole poured in nine points and had three rebounds and three assists, while
JaQuanna Murray tallied five points, eight rebounds and one assist.
The Lady Bulldogs take on Hampton University at 5 p.m. on Monday.
