MBB:Bulldogs Play Final Regular Season Home Game Against Tigers

SC State seniors will be honored during “Senior Day”

ORANGEBURG,SC—The South Carolina State mens basketball team will close out their final home game of the regular season Saturday (Feb.28) against the visiting Tigers of Savannah State at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Plagued my many injuries this season, the Bulldogs are 7-7 in the MEAC, 10-19 overall and are in 7th place in league standings, while Savannah State enters the contest in 11th place at a 4-9 league, 8-19 overall record.

SERIES: South Carolina State leads the series 18-9 over Savannah State on the hardwood.

LAST MEETING:  SC State held off a late rally by Savannah State to come away with a, 56-53 (Feb.14), victory over the host Tigers. Savannah  native, sophomore guard Greg Mortimer led the Bulldogs with 11 points, while freshman forward Tashombe Riley added 10 in the win. SSU guard Terel Hall led the Tigers with 18 points.

BULLDOG BITE: Freshman guard Edward Stephens has earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors six times this season. Stephens currently leads the team in scoring with 12 ppg and 3.0 rebounds.

South Carolina State also tally nearly seven steals per game while forcing almost 13 turnovers. Sophomore guard Greg Mortimer is second on the team with 8.4, while junior forward Darryl Palmer is the leader on the board with 7.0 rebounds, 7.7 points and 2.2 blocks per game.

Meanwhile, SSU is led by senior guard Hall with 10.6 ppg in 27 starts this seasons, while sophomore guard Alante Fenner s second with 8.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing. Sophomore forward Saadiq Muhammad is a key reserve for the Tigers off the bench with 7.1 points and 4.1 rebounds.

LOOKING AHEAD: SC State travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. next Thursday to play Bethune-Cookman in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader with the women beginning in a 5:30 p.m., tipoff in the regular-season finale for both teams. After that, the Bulldogs head to Norfolk, Va. for the 2015 MEAC Tournament which runs from March 9-14 at the Scope Arena.
