Box Score GREENVILLE, SC – The Furman Paladins avenged last season loss with a , 17-3, victory over South Carolina State
Saturdayevening (Oct. 3) in a steady rain at Paladin Stadium.
Tristan Luke scored twice and Furman's defense kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone on two deep drives despite outgaining the Paladins with 272 total yards to 221 on the night.
Coach Buddy Pough's team fell to 2-2 with the loss, while Furman climbed to 3-2 on the year to increase their lead to 12-5 in the series, including 8-1 in Greenville.
The Bulldogs were led by Jalen 'Scoot' Simmons with 70 yards on 19 attempts. Freshman quarterback
Caleb York completed 19 of 29 pass attempts for 192 yards, however, the Charlotte native had two fumbles and suffered two interceptions in only his third collegiate start.
"It was a disappointing loss," said Pough following the contest. "We didn't do enough things well and just didn't get it done, and perhaps lost a game we had every opportunity to win."
"We made far too many mistakes and have only ourselves to blame. And, when we did get in scoring position, we didn't execute well and couldn't get into the end zone. We were also hurt by penalties but most of it was our own doing."
"But, we don't have much time to try and turn things around. We only have five days before we have to be back on the field. It's short turn-around but that's just the way things are."
Senior All-American defensive lineman
Javon Hargrave spearheaded the Bulldog defense with 10 tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. Sophomore punter
Jerome Pettiway had 44.6 yards on seven punts.
The Bulldogs resume their schedule
Thursday in a
7:30 p.m. contest against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe, Bethune-Cookman, at Daytona Beach in a game that will be televised live on ESPNU.
