Kourtney Williams scored a game-high 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 65-60 win over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
SC State (9-7, 2-3 MEAC) wasted no time getting started and jumped out to a quick 13-point lead, 15-2, after a 3-pointer by
Amber Howard with 14:14 left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs led by 14 (28-14) after a tree-point play by
Toni Grier at the 3:29 mark, but Delaware State (3-12, 1-2 MEAC) went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to four (28-24) right before halftime.
The Lady Hornets got focused in the second half and took the lead on a jumper by Mikah Aldridge with 13:13 left in the game. They held the lead for a little more than five minutes but a bucket by
Jazzmine Johnson at the 8:36 mark tied the game at 47-all.
Things were much closer in the final three minutes and SC State was able to hold on for the win.
Four of the seven Lady Hornets who played scored in double figures. Aldridge led the charge with 18 points. N'Kayah Kersey finished with 12 points, while Aliah Stinnett and Tierra Hawkins each dropped in 10 points. Hawkins grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Howard was the only other Lady Bulldog in double figures with 11 points. Grier had eight points and a career-high eight rebounds.
SC State returns to action on Monday night with a 5:30 p.m. game at Maryland Eastern Shore.
