PRACTICE BRIEF: SC State Holds Second Day Of Fall Drills

27 more days until season-opener versus Benedict In Palmetto Capital City Classic

ORANGEBURG, SC—South Carolina State conducted its second of 24 scheduled preseason practices Sunday in preparation for their Aug. 30 showdown with intrastate rival Benedict in the Palmetto Capital City Classic at Charles W. Johnson Stadium.

Despite, the cloudy overcast and chance for rain the Bulldogs managed to have a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets during the morning session.

"I thought we had a pretty good enthusiastic day and we seem to be a  lot farther along than we have been in previous years, " said  head coach Pough. "We seem to have a little bit better understanding of things on offense, which makes it easier to evaluate because you don't have that many mistakes at this point."

The Bulldogs spent the first portion of practice working on installation team and individual type drills, while the turning their attention to fundamental schemes on both offense and defense.

"We have a lot of newcomers on both sides of the ball (offense and defense) that seem to be coming along quite well. So it will be interesting to see those guys develop into some pretty good football players we can use in the future," he said.

Pough added that the offensive and defensive line seem to be working really hard to get down the different type of schemes.

The Bulldogs will conduct its third practice Monday (Aug. 4), in a morning session at 9:30 a.m. in helmets and shells, followed by a Tuesday (Aug.5) afternoon workout before suiting up in full gear on Wednesday (Aug.6).

Coach Buddy Pough's team will hold its annual "Press and Picture Day" Saturday (Aug. 9), beginning at 9 a.m. at the O.C. Dawson Stadium before conducting its first preseason scrimmage at 7 p.m. The team's annual "Meet the Players Day", sponsored by The STATE Club, will be held August 16th at 12:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the second preseason scrimmage at 10 a.m.

The Bulldogs open their 12-game 2014 schedule Aug. 30 on the road against Benedict College in the Palmetto Capital City Classic at 5 p.m.at Charles W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia.
