SC State Falls to Florida A&M in MEAC Women’s Basketball Contest

Tallahassee, Fla.—SC State fell to Florida A&M (FAMU) by six, 64-70, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball contest in Tallahassee.  With the loss, SC State drops to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in the MEAC while FAMU improves to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the MEAC. 
 
Redshirt-sophomore Mykala Jones scored a team-high 24 points including six three-pointers to lead SC State.  Graduate Cabriel Duren was the only other SC State player to score in double-figures with 10.
 
SC State jumped out to a seven point lead, 15-8, over the first four minutes of the game.  FAMU managed to cut the lead to five, 19-14 at the 11:25 mark.  SC State was forced into a timeout after a three-pointer by the Lady Rattler's Jasmin Grice capped off a 6-1 run to cut the Lady Bulldogs deficit to one, 20-19, with 7:53 remaining. A steal and bucket with 7:44 left in the half gave the FAMU its first lead of the game at 20-21.  The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead, 23-21, off a three-pointer by Jones at the 6:41 mark but a quick basket by Grice knotted the game at 23-23.  After a brief 25-23 lead by the Lady Bulldogs, FAMU went on a 10-4 run over 2-plus minutes to go up by six, 35-29, heading into the half.
 
FAMU maintained the momentum to start the second half, increasing its lead to 14, 33-47, with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.  The Lady Rattlers kept pressing, using a 16-2 run to open up its biggest lead of the game 15, 36-51, with 12:33 remaining.  A three-pointer by Mykala Jones at the 12:07 mark ignited a 7-0 run over a two minute period to cut the deficit to five, 51-46, with just over 10 minutes remaining.  SC State picked up its defense intensity which allowed them to chip away at FAMU lead.  After two straight baskets by the Lady Rattlers, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 8-0 run to tie the game at 55-all with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest.  FAMU then went on a 7-2 run of its own to go up 62-57 with 5:22 left.  The Lady Bulldogs continued to battle, using a 7-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to tie the game at 64-64 with 1:52 remaining in the game.  FAMU went on a 6-0 run to close the game and pick-up the 70-64 victory.
 
Graduate Dayshaun Richbow contributed nine points with six rebounds and five assist and Junior Persephone Goodwin came off the bench to drop in nine points with seven rebounds and five blocks in the contest for the Lady Bulldogs.
 
Florida A&M was led by Jasmine Grice with a game-high 26 points.  The Lady Rattlers had four players to score in double-figures as Tierra Prothro scored 16, Taneka Rubin had 12 and Alicia Hines scored 10 in the contest.  Prothro and Rubin each recorded a double-double as they pulled in 14 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
 
SC State will remain in the Sunshine State as they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. Monday, Feb. 3 to take on the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman in a MEAC matchup.  The Lady Bulldogs will close out its three-game road swing when they travel to Dover, Del. next Saturday (Feb. 8) to face the Lady Hornets of Delaware State.
