SC STATE WOMEN GRAB FIRST ROAD WIN

Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – South Carolina State got 22 points from junior Kourtney Williams and 16 from graduate DayShaun Richbow in earning its first road win of the campaign, an 80-53 triumph over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Morgan State Saturday at Hill Field House.

In winning away from home for the first time this season and nabbing its first road victory since a 70-50 triumph at North Carolina Center on Mar. 4, 2013, Coach Doug Robertson's team improved to 4-8 on the year and 2-0 in the MEAC.

The Lady Bulldogs also got 13 points from Persephone "Ci Ci" Goodwin and 11 from Cabriel Duren in the win. Goodwin and Brittany Andersen, who contributed five points, each had seven rebounds for SC State, which enjoyed a 38-30 edge on the boards.

SC State also had one of its best shooting performances of the season, nailing 55.9 percent (33-59) of its attempts from the field, including 60 percent accuracy (20-33) in the second half, when Robertson's team outscored the host Lady Bears 48-20. Also, SC State committed just 10 turnovers – a season low – and had 11 steals.

"We played well and gave a great effort most of the game," said Robertson after the game. "I tried to push our players to go even harder because I think we can reach another level. Today, we showed flashes of how well we can play.

"It was a solid team effort. Of course, Kourtney Williams did another good job, Goodwin did a solid job of rebounding the ball and also started making those 'chippies' around the basket after I got on her at the half, and Richbow did a great job setting the tempo and picking her opportunities to score."

Morgan State, which got 16 points from Tracey Carrington and 10 from Danielle Forrest, scored the game's first two points, but Williams got three consecutive baskets points to give SC State a 6-2 lead with 17:58 left in the opening period. The Lady Bears came back to grab a 9-6 advantage with 13:30 showing, however, a basket by Goodwin and a Duren free throw deadlocked the contest at 9-all with 13:07 showing.

Morgan, paced by Dinah Jones, who came off the bench for nine points and five rebounds, built a 22-13 edge on three straight free throws by Tracey Carrington, who was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer with 8:03 left in the half. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 19-11 run to close the half and pull to within one, 33-32, at intermission.

SC State began the final 20 minutes with a 25-11 run to go ahead 57-44 on a three-point play by Goodwin off an assist from Richbow with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Following a full time out by Morgan, the Lady Bulldogs continued their offensive assault, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to build a 68-46 lead with 4:24 showing. The Lady Bulldogs took their biggest lead with 33 seconds remaining when Richbow got a layup for an 80-50 edge. The Lady Bears' Danielle Robinson nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

The Lady Bulldogs will remain in Baltimore for a Monday MEAC doubleheader at Coppin State, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
