SC State Game Notes Coastal Carolina Game Notes
ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State football team will open the 2013 season at home against last season's Big South Co-Champion #25 Coastal Carolina on Saturday at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium. Kick-off set for 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs and Chanticleers are meeting for the 3rd time in a series that began in 2005. Coastal won that contest 24-23 in Orangeburg on a last-second score and followed that victory with a 33-14 triumph at Conway in 2006 to build a 2-0 lead in the series.
SC State (5-6, 4-4 MEAC in 2012), coming off their worst season ever under the tenure of head coach Buddy Pough were picked to finish second in the MEAC, while the Chanticleers (8-5, 5-1 Big South), under second-year head coach Joe Maglia, were picked to finish first in the Big South Conference.
A win over the nationally-ranked Chanticleers (21st in the College Sporting News rankings and 25th in The Sports Network poll) would earn SC State an early look from national pollsters and, perhaps, begin the climb back to respectability.
Red-shirt senior quarterback Richard Cue will be the signal caller for the Bulldogs against the Chanticleers. Cue led the air attack last season throwing 144-of-290-14 for 1,819 yards and 11 touchdowns. Junior linebacker Justin Hughes spearheaded the defense with 78 tackles, 54 solo with 7.5 TFL and 5 sacks.
Coastal Carolina is led by wide receiver Matt Hazel who was selected as the Preseason Big South Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate linebacker Quinn Backus was picked as the Preseason Big South Defensive Player of the Year.
