SC State Falls to Savannah State in Women’s Basketball

Savannah, Ga.—The SC State women's basketball team saw its two-game win streak snapped as they fell to Savannah State, 49-46, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup in Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.  With the loss the Lady Bulldogs fall to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in the MEAC while Savannah State improved to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC.

SC State jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead to start the game. Savannah State then used a 9-5 run to take the one point lead, 11-12, at the 9:08 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs quickly regain the lead, 15-12, off a quick 4-0 run.  SC State held Savannah State scoreless over a six plus minute span while increasing its lead to eight, with at the 2:59 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs went up by nine point with 55 seconds remaining and enjoyed a five lead at the half, 23-18.

Savannah State began the second half very aggressive scoring the first four points to pull within one, 23-22, in the first two minutes. Jasmine Norman capitalized off a traditional three-point play which allowed the Lady Tigers to take 26-28 lead at the 15:40 mark.  Savannah State maintained the momentum throughout the second half, enjoying its biggest lead of seven, 33-40, with 6:08 remaining in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs used an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to one, 44-45, with 2:12 but could not get any closer eventually falling by three, 49-46.

“You can't miss double-digit layups and expect to win the game,” said head coach Doug Robertson.   “The plus in this is that we out-rebounded them which is something that we have been working all season.”

Senior Trinese Fox was the only Lady Bulldog player to score in double-figures with 13.  Senior Ashley Clarke pulled in 11 rebounds while senior Fannie Goodwin came off the bench to contribute eight points with eight rebounds.

Erin Houge recorded a double-double, with game highs 18 points-18 rebounds to lead Savannah State.

SC State will return home for a brief two-game home-stand next Saturday and Monday (Feb 16 & 18) when they host North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central, respectively.   The Lady Bulldogs will then hit the road for the next four games beginning Saturday, Feb. 23 at Bethune-Cookman.
