Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State's Kourtney Williams had 15 points to lead four Lady Bulldogs in double figures as Coach Doug Robertson's team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 63-50 win over visiting Maryland Eastern Shore Monday night

It was only the second win of the season – both coming at home – for SC State, which improved to 2-8 on the season, but more importantly, the win gave the host a 1-0 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as the contest was the league opener for both squads. Also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs were Dayshaun Richbow with 12 points and Cherisha Floyd and reserve Lynasia Frazier with 10 each.

Persephone Goodwin led SC State on the boards with eight rebounds and added four points. The Lady Bulldogs won despite shooting just 38 percent from the floor and being outrebounded 56-36 by UMES, which dipped to 3-9 on the season and 0-1 in the MEAC.

The Lady Hawks had their troubles as well, hitting just 26.2 percent of their shots and committing 30 turnovers to 22 miscues for SC State.

"It was not a pretty win by any definition," said SC State's Robertson after the contest. "We committed far too many turnovers and just got mauled on the boards. But we got an early lead and Frazier and Floyd made some key baskets down the stretch when they (the Lady Hawks) started to make a run. "I'm just glad for the win and glad to be home after being on the road for six games. The road was not kind to us as we lost all six games during an almost month-long stretch away from home."

The Lady Bulldogs are 0-8 away from Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Jessica Long had 13 points and was the only Lady Hawk in double figures. Breonna Evans and Shawnee Sweeney added eight points each and Shanyce Stewart pulled down a game-high 18 boards for UMES.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the game's first six points and moved out to a 22-11 lead on a baseline drive by Williams with 7:09 left in the opening half. The Lady Hawks closed the gap to 22-17 on two free throws by Long but SC State took a 27-21 lead to the dressing room.

The visitors closed to within four early in the second half, 27-23, with 18:28 left but an 11-2 run put SC State ahead 38-25 with 11:17 on the clock. The Lady Hawks came to within nine points three times after that, the last time 57-48 on a 3-pointer by Sweeney with 1:28 showing but could get no closer. SC State's biggest lead was 14 – 39-25 – with just under 11 minutes left.

The Lady Bulldogs return to the court next Monday when they host Southern Wesleyan in a 6 p.m. contest.
