SC State Suffers 56-0 Defeat To #24 Arizona

Box Score TUCSON, AZ— South Carolina State (1-2 overall, 0-1 MEAC) dropped its second straight contest Saturday, with a 56-0 loss to PAC 12 foe #24 University of Arizona (3-0 overall, 0-0 Pac 12) at Arizona Stadium.
       The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead when quarterback Matt Scott (6-3, 196-Sr.) connected with junior wide receiver Richard Morrison (5-11, 183) on a 15-yard touchdown pass at the 12:01 mark in the first quarter. Senior full back/tight end Taimi Tutogi (6-1, 260) caught a 14-yard toss from Scott midway through the second quarter with 12:36 left, to move the Wildcats ahead.
       Arizona kept pounding on a 7-yard punch by sophomore running back Ka'Dean Carey (5-10,197) to pull ahead 21-0 with 7:13 left in the half. Junior quarterback Richard Cue's pass was intercepted by sophomore defensive back Jonathan McKnight (5-11, 167), to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Scott to close out the half.
        Arizona led 28-0 over SC State at the half. The Wildcats dominated the first-half with 323 total yards (148 rushing and 175 passing). Senior quarterback Matt Scott threw 20-of-26 for 175 yards and two touchdowns.
       Scott threw his third touchdown strike on the night, when he connected with senior Dan Buckner (6-4, 215) on a 27-yard reception at the 9:37 mark in the third quarter.
        Reserve running back Daniel Jenkins scored on a 5-yard run to give Arizona a 42-0 lead to close out the quarter. Red-Shirt freshman running back Jared Baker's (5-8, 191) 4-yard touchdown punch late in the fourth with 5:58 left put Arizona ahead 55-0.
        Freshman linebacker Reggie Owens led the Bulldogs on defense with a game-high 12 tackles (10 solo), while linebacker Joe Thomas finished with nine and sophomore linebacker Justin Hughes and junior defensive back Mason Harris each finished with 7 in the loss.
        Arizona closed out the night with 647 yards total offense, along with 40 first downs in the victory.
       SC State will be back on the road again next week when they travel to College Station, TX to face the Aggies of Texas A&M in a non-conference battle. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
