SC State Snaps Losing Skid With 74-58 Win Over Longwood

Box Score ORANGEBURG,SC – The South Carolina State Bulldogs snap their longest losing streak in school history Monday night, with a 74-58 victory over Longwood University (8-15) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
       The Bulldogs (5-18 overall, 0-9 MEAC) snapping a 16-game losing streak was led by freshman guard Devin Joint with 16 points and eight rebounds, while senior Brandon Riley chipped in 14 on the night.
        “Our guys played with character and never once did they give up tonight,” said Associate head coach Murray Garvin. “Devin Joint played an outstanding game for us tonight coming off the bench.”
       SC State led majority of the first-half going up three, 23-20, off a driving layup by senior forward Omar Sanders at the 7:38 mark. Senior guard Martiz Washington nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, 29-28 with 3:50 left in the half.
       The Bulldogs rallied back to increase the lead to six, 35-29, off a pair of layups of junior Shaquil Barber and senior Presano Bell with 1:09 left in the half.  Senior forward Antwan Carter tossed in a 3-pointer with 0:46 seconds to pull the Lancers within three, 35-32. SC State closed out the first-half with a 35-32 lead.
       Junior point guard Khalif Toomb's 3-pointer at the 10:31 mark put SC State ahead 11, 58-47. Forward Joe Ikhinmwin gave the Bulldogs the momentum they needed nailing a jumper with 3:33 left to give SC State its biggest lead of the night 17, 68-51.  Joint's 3-pointer with 2:16 left in regulation sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.
       SC State cruised to a 74-58 victory over non-conference foe Longwood. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Lancers 45-28, while managing a season low just nine turnovers in the game along with the bench outscoring their opponent 38-2.
        Omar Sanders finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and 13 points. Longwood had three players in double figures with senior forward Anwtan Carter leading with way with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Tristan Carey finished with 18. Senior guard Martiz Washington added 10 in the loss for the Lancers.
        Garvin stated, “The game plan was to take the ball inside and get their big man in foul trouble. I think we did a good job of doing that with the way Sanders played on the boards.”
       “We have a tough task against us this weekend when we play N.C. A&T, but that's always a tough environment on both ends”, stated Garvin. “I can assure you we will be ready to play.”
       SC State will return to action this weekend when they hit the road to take on N.C. A&T (Feb.11) in a 4 p.m. tipoff, and NC Central (Feb. 13) at 7:30 p.m.
