SC State Basketball Team’s Host FAMU In MEAC Doubleheader

ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State men's and women's is set to face MEAC foe Florida A&M in a pivotal league doubleheader Monday, at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. for the women, with the men following immediately after.
         The Bulldogs (5-21 overall, 0-12 MEAC), still seeking their first conference win of the season, will face a scrappy Rattler team(7-19 overall, 5-7 MEAC) currently ranked ninth in the conference. SC State is coming off tough 70-59 defeat to Bethune-Cookman, while FAMU suffered a 76-57 setback to first-place Savannah State.
SC State will be looking to avoid a season sweet, when Rattlers won earlier this season in an 86-69 (1/16/12) contest.
         Senior guard Brandon Riley leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 16.7 ppg, while floor general and point guard Khalif Toombs and senior Omar Sanders is averaging over 10 points per contest. Sanders lead team in rebounding with 7.4 per outing.
        The Rattlers are led my Amin Stevens who is averaging 15.9 points per game, while also leading the team in rebounding with 9.8 per outing. Reggie Lewis adds 11.5 ppg, while teammate's Avery Moore and Yanick Crowder chips in a little over 9.0 points per game.
        On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs (11-12 overall, 6-6 MEAC) will take on a very talented Lady Rattler team (18-6 overall, 11-1 MEAC), who is currently in first-place in the conference race. SC State dropped a tough 69-65 decision to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, while FAMU defeated Savannah State 58-45.
        Junior point guard Tiara Knotts leads the SC State women in scoring with 12.8 ppg, while forward Paris Alston and guard Cabriel Duren are averaging a little over 9.0 points per outing. Junior forward Tiana Hemphill is the Lady Bulldog rebounding leader, grabbing 8.4 boards per contest.
        The Lady Rattlers have five players in double figures with Antonia Bennett leading the way with 19.2 ppg, Tameka McKelton 13.9 ppg, Jasmine Grice 12.4 ppg, while Qiana Donald adds 11.8 ppg and 9.3 rpg, and teammate Kimberly Sparkman is scoring 10.6 per contest.
      Both SC State teams will return to action on Saturday when they host conference rival N.C. A&T State on “Senior Day”. Tipoff for the women's contest is set for 2 p.m. The men's game will follow immediately after.
