Lady Bulldogs Hold Off Lady Spartans 62-59

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC---Red-shirt freshman guard Mykala Jones tossed in a game-high 17 points to lead South Carolina State to a 62-59 overtime victory over Norfolk State Monday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
       The Lady Bulldogs improve to 5-2 overall, 1-1 MEAC, while the Lady Spartans fall to 1-6 overall, 0-2 in the league.
       “I thought our team played hard tonight down the stretch,” said SC State head coach Doug Robertson. “We made some mistakes and gave them a chance to get back in the game but overall we did a good job holding on for the victory.”
       SC State jumped out to 17-14 lead at the 7:35 mark off a layup by senior forward Paris Alston. Senior guard Cabriel Duren's driving layup with 5:07 left in the half gave the Lady Bulldogs a commanding 10-point advantage, 24-14.
       Junior forward Brittany Cochran's layup with 1:25 left before halftime gave SC State full control, 35-22. Senior guards Trinese Fox and Tiara Knotts tossed in a pair of free-throws each with less than 0:25 seconds left to close out the half with an 18-point lead, 40-22.
        The Lady Spartans committed a costly 19 turnovers during the first-half, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 65.0% from the free-throw going 13-of-20.
         Norfolk State opened the second-half with a 16-2 run led by junior guard Kashay Barnes nailing back-to-back 3-pointers, along with a tip-in to cut the lead to six, 44-38 at the 12:50 mark.  Alston powered the Lady Bulldogs head with a layup with 10:26 left to put SC State ahead 12, 50-38.
        The Lady Spartans sparked a late 18-6 rally off jumper by junior forward Aivah Parham to tie the game 56-56 with 2:27 left.  A pair of missed free-throws by junior forward Rachel Gordon forced overtime.
         Jones nailed two 3-pointers in overtime to give the Lady Bulldogs a six point lead, 62-56 with 1:24 left.        
        Sophomore forward Ebony Brown pulled the Lady Spartans within three, 62-59 tossing in a long range 3-pointer with 0:32 seconds remaining in regulation.
        SC State held on to capture their first conference win of the season with a 62-59 victory over Norfolk State. Tiara Knotts finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and four assist for the Lady Bulldogs, while teammate forward Fannie Goodwin racked up a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
        Gordon led the Lady Spartans with a monster finish scoring a team-high 16 points, while grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds in the loss.  Barnes finished with 10 points and five rebounds on the night.
        Norfolk State dominated SC State on the boards out-rebounded the Lady Bulldogs 60-41, while finishing with a costly 29 turnovers.
         The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday when they travel to take on ACC foe Clemson University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
