SC State Falls to Florida A&M in a MEAC Women’s Basketball Matchup

Tallahassee, Fla.--The SC State women's basketball team fell to Florida A&M, 62-79, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match up at the Alfred Lawson Center on the campus of Florida A&M.

SC State (8-9, 3-3 MEAC) started the game a little sluggish, falling into an 8-2 hole by the 15:17 mark.  SC State picked up its offense, using a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to three, 11-8 at 12:45 mark.  The Lady Rattlers pushed its lead to six, 16-10 with 10:51 remaining.  Florida A&M took complete control of the first half, stretching its lead to 15, 34-19 with a little over four minutes remaining.  The Lady Rattlers maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and enjoyed a 14 point lead heading into the half up 38-24.

Florida A&M remained aggressive to start the second half as they used a 12-4 run to increase its lead to 22, 50-28 by the 15:54 mark. SC State picked up its defensive intensity but its offense remained stagnant, as their first field goal of the second half did not come until at the 14:30 mark.  The Lady Rattlers continued to press extending its lead to 23, before going on to capture the17 point victory (79-62).

Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs had four players to record in double-digits led by junior Tiara Knotts with 17.  Cabriel Duren scored 11 while Trinese fox and Tiana Hemphill scored 10 points each.  Hemphill recorded a double-double as she pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds in the in the loss.

Antonia Bennett scored a game-high 27 points including 11-of-14 from the field to lead Florida A&M.  Tameka McKelton scored 12 and Jamie Foreman scored 10 as the Lady Rattlers improved to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in the MEAC.  Regina Smiley pulled in nine rebounds and Kimberly Sparkman scored nine points in the victory.

SC State will close out its three-game road-swing this Saturday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Lady Tigers of Savannah State University.  The Lady Bulldogs will return home on Monday, Jan. 30, when they host the Lady Bison of Howard University in a 6 p.m. conference matchup.
