Bethune-Cookman Holds Off Late Rally To Defeat SC State 82-76

Bulldogs drop 11-straight game this season.

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, FL---Junior point guard Khalif Toombs scored a team-high 16 points and dished out five assists, while teammate senior forward Presano Bell tossed in 15 but it wasn't enough as Bethune-Cookman avoided a late rally to defeat SC State 82-76.
       SC State falls to 4-13 overall, 0-4 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman improves to 6-12 overall, 3-1 in the league. The Bulldogs have dropped their 11-straight game this season.
       The Wildcats had five players scoring in double-figures with Adrien Coleman leading the way with 19 points, senior forward Anthony Breeze was second with 15, while Kevin Dukes and Garrius Holloman scored 12 each. Freshman guard Ricky Johnson added 11 in the victory.
       “We dug ourselves in a hole early on in the game,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “When we started to make a run at it towards the end of the game we just came up short.”
       Coleman nailed a 3-pointer at the 7:12 mark to give the Wildcats an eight-point lead, 31-23. Bethune increased its lead to 11, 44-33 with 0:38 seconds left in the first half off a 3-pointer by guard Kevin Dukes. Hollman's monster dunk as time expired gave Bethune-Cookman an extra boost going into the half with a 46-35 lead.
        The second half proved to be all Bethune-Cookman jumping out to their biggest lead of the game 15, 76-61 off a jumper by Garrius Holloman at the 6:11 mark. The Bulldogs sparked a 13-2 rally to pull within four, 78-74 with 0:46 seconds left in regulation.
       Free throws seemed to be the deciding factor down the stretch as Breeze along with teammate Kevin Dukes tossed in a pair of free throws with 0:17 seconds left to secure the victory for the Wildcats.
       Freshman forward Luka Radovic scored 14, while junior guard Shaquil Barber chipped in 12 in the loss.
       SC State will return to action on Monday when they travel to Tallahassee to take on the Rattlers of Florida A&M in a crucial showdown. Tipoff is 8 p.m., immediately following the women's contest.
        Game Notes: Points off Turnovers: Bethune-Cookman 14- SC State; 3-point shooting SC State 37.5% connecting on 3-of-8, while Bethune-Cookman shot 60% from behind the arch connecting on 6-of-10.
