Wiley Leads #25 SC State Over DSU 69-0

ORANGEBURG, SC—Junior red-shirt quarterback Derrick Wiley had a career setting day passing for four touchdowns and rushing for two, as SC State demolished Delaware State 69-0 Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
      The Bulldogs returning home after a three game stint on the road played before a crowd of 15, 227 on Youth/ROTC Day.
      “It's great to finally have a breather after three straight road games and to play in front our crowd felt really good, said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. This game gave us a chance to play a lot of players and it was exciting to see these guys get an opportunity to play at home.”
      SC State got on the boards first off a 43-yard pass from Derrick Wiley to sophomore wide receiver Tyler McDonald with 8:19 left in the first quarter. The second quarter proved to be all Wiley giving the Bulldogs a commanding 28-0 lead, hitting freshman wide receiver Julius Pendergrass on a 5-yard toss at the 14:32 mark.  
        Wiley found the end zone again on a 3-yard punch and a 13-yard pass to sophomore tight end Dwight Brannon with 4:11 left in the first-half.
         Pough stated, “Derrick is really getting comfortable in our office, and he's beginning to do those things we thought he could do as a player.”
       The second-half was all SC State increasing the margin to 41-0 on a 1-yard punch by Wiley to start off the third quarter. Sophomore linebacker Joe Thomas sparked the defense on a 43-yard interception for a touchdown at the 11:36 mark. Wiley threw his fourth touchdown of the day on a 71-yard bomb to redshirt sophomore Caleb Davis with 8:44 left in the third.
        SC State used all three quarterbacks on the day and it proved to be to their advantage as backup Richard Cue scored on a 3-yard punch and later on a 15-yard pass to freshman Dennis Rowe to put the Bulldogs up 62-0 midway through the fourth quarter.
       Freshman TeDarius Wiley, younger brother of starting quarterback Derrick Wiley threw his first career touchdown on a 12-yard pass to Pendergrass with 4:09 left in the game. SC State cruised to a 69-0 victory and sits on top of the MEAC standings with a 2-0 MEAC record.
      SC State finished with a their best offensive attack this season racking up 687 total yards, while the defense proved why they are the best in the country limiting the Hornets to just 84.
       “We will enjoy this for a while and the turn our thoughts to Norfolk State, said Pough. I expect that game to be a real challenge for us.”
       Despite, not finding the end zone on the day freshman running back Jalen “Scoot” Simmons in his first career start led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 126 yards. Junior Chris Merrill added 72 yards in the victory.
      Sophomore Caleb Davis led the receiving corps with six catches for 147 yards. Junior signal caller Derrick Wiley finished the day throwing 12-of-20 for 238 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
       Thomas led the Bulldogs defense with 7 tackles and one interception for a score. Senior Pat Washington also had monster day finishing with 7 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack.
       SC State will be back on the road when they travel to Norfolk, VA to take on MEAC foe Norfolk State in a pivotal league showdown. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
