SC State Falls to Hampton in Women’s Basketball

Lady Bulldogs Drops Seventh Straight

Wiley scored a team-high 21 points
Hampton, Va.—Whitney Wiley scored a team-high 21 points as SC State fell to Hampton, 57-77, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup at the Hampton University Convocation.

SC State and Hampton exchanged baskets for the first six minutes of the contest with neither team taking more than a one point advantage. Two free-throws by Melanie Warner at the 14:18 mark gave Hampton a one point lead (9-8). The Lady Pirates increased its lead to 16 (30-14) before enjoying an 18 point lead at the half, 35-17.

The Lady Bulldogs appeared to have regrouped after half-time as they began the second half on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit in half, 37-28, and forcing a Lady Pirates timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Pirates went on a 9-0 run of their own to once again increase its lead to 18, 46-28. Hampton pushed its lead up to 27, 66-39, with just over six minutes remaining in the contest before going on to win the contest by 20, 77-57.

Wiley was the only SC State player to score in double-figures as Tracey Flowers and Fannie Goodwin each contributed seven points as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 6-13 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC.
Hampton, who improved to 16-6 overall and 9-1 in the MEAC, had three players to score in double-figures led by Quanneisha Perry with 25 points. Choicetta McMillian scored 22 and Keiara Avant contributed 11 points in the victory. Perry finished the game with a double-double as she pulled in a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Monday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Washington, DC to take on the Lady Bison of Howard University in a MEAC match-up. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Burr Gymnasium on the campus of Howard University.
