SC State Holds off Late Game Surge by Norfolk State

Norfolk, Va.—The SC State women's basketball team held off a late game surge by Norfolk State en route to a 75-69 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win in Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.  The contest was the third-of-six straight road games for the Lady Bulldogs.

SC State (3-4, 1-1 MEAC) was very aggressive to start the game.  The Lady Bulldogs built a 17-2 lead by the 13:29 mark of the first half.  Norfolk State picked up its intensity, using a 9-4 run to pull within 10, 11-21, at the 9:24 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs maintained a 10 point lead throughout the remainder of the first half, enjoying a 33-23 lead heading into the half. 

Norfolk State started the second half on an 8-3 run to close the gap to five, 36-31.  SC State once again picked up its intensity using a 6-2 run of its own to increase the margin to nine, 42-33 with 15:54 remaining in the second half.  The teams then exchanged baskets before Norfolk State once again began to play aggressive.  The Spartans used 9-2 run to pull within two, 44-42, with just over 11 minutes remaining in the contest.  Norfolk State remained aggressive over the next three minutes taking their first lead of the game, 50-51, at the 8:01 mark of the second half.  The Lady Bulldogs regained the two-point lead, 53-51, at the 7:58 mark off a three-pointer by Tiara Knotts.  SC State pushed its lead to eight, 63-55, with just under four minutes remaining in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs managed to hold off the late game push by Norfolk State to win the game, 75-69.

Tiara Knotts led four Lady Bulldogs in double-figures with 16.  Cabriel Duren contributed 15; Tracey Flowers added 11 and Trinese Fox dropped in 10 points in the contest.  Junior center Paris Alston was one rebound and one point shy of a double-double as she scored nine points and pulled in a game-high nine rebounds in the game. Junior Tiana Hemphill, the team's leading rebounder, had seven boards and Flowers pulled in six in the victory.

Norfolk State was led by Whitney Long who scored a game-high 18 points.  Rae Corbo scored 14 and Ebony Brown contributed 10 as the Spartans fell to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC.

SC State will continue its road swing when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. this Saturday (Dec. 10) to face Winthrop.  The Lady Bulldogs will close out its six-game road swing at the University of South Carolina (12/14) and Coastal Carolina (12/18). SC State will return home on Monday, Dec. 19 when they host UNC-Asheville.
