Longwood Rally From Behind To Defeat SC State 92-81

—The South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-4) dropped their second straight contest in a row, suffering a tough 92-81 defeat to Longwood University  (3-5)Friday at Willett Hall.
       South Carolina State senior guard Brandon Riley poured in a career-high 34 points, while forward Omar Sanders chipped in 15 in the loss.
       Longwood had five players in double-figures with Antwan Carter leading the way with 20 points and nine rebounds, Tristan Carter is second with  the only double-double of the game , 19 pts and 10 rebounds, Martiz Washington added 17, while Jan vander der Kooj chipped 15 in the loss. Jeremiah Brown dished out a game-high 10 assists and tossed in 11 for the Racers.
SC State falls to 4-4 on the season, while Longwood improves to 3-5.
       “We were the opponent and we beat ourselves in this game,” said SC State head coach Tim Carter. “The four-straight turnovers in the second half put us in a hole we couldn't climb out.”
        The Bulldogs jumped to a quick eight-point lead, 27-19 off a 3-pointer by guard Brandon Riley at the 8:49 mark in the first half. Sanders threw down monster dunk to lift SC State to their biggest lead of the night 14, 33-19 with 7:15 left in the half.
         Longwood sparked a 19-5 run off back-to-back 3-pointers by guard Martiz Washington late in the first half to pull within four, 38-34 with 3:01 left. Sanders scored a driving layup with 1:03 left to extend the lead to eight, 44-36.
South Carolina State took a 47-39 lead into halftime.
        The Bulldogs jumped out early with a dunk by Sanders and a 3-pointer to start the second half to increase the lead to 13, 52-39. The Racers sparked a 17-4 lead off a 3-pointer Jan van der Kooj at the 14:14 mark to tied the game 56-56 all.
Carter's layup with 8:04 left in the game gave Longwood a 10-point lead, 74-64. Riley's back-to-back 3-pointers pulled the    
        Bulldogs within two, 76-74 with 5:46 left in the contest. The Racers rallied back to take full control of the game with forward Tristan Carey nailing a 3-pointer  and  hitting a jumper to extend the lead to nine, 85-76 with 2:06 left.
        Free-throws seemed to be the deciding factor down the stretch as Longwood shot 71.4 % from the free-throw hitting 10-of-14 in the second-half to seal the victory. SC State's Brandon Riley nailed a game-high seven 3-pointers in the loss.
        Junior guard Khalif Toombs added 10 points and eight assists in the loss for the Bulldogs, senior forward Presano Bell chipped in 7 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
         Next up for SC State is Norfolk State (12/5) in an 8 p.m. tipoff followed by Gardner-Webb (12/10) in Boling Springs, NC; University of Pittsburgh (12/17) in Pittsburgh, Pa; University of Oklahoma (12/21) in Norman, Ok; University of Hawaii (12/29) in Honolulu, Hawaii and South Carolina (1/2/12) in Columbia, SC. The Bulldogs return to home play on January 7, against Morgan State in an exciting MEAC doubleheader. Tipoff is 2 p.m., with the men's game following immediately.
