SC State Falls to Georgia in a Non-Conference Women’s Basketball Matchup

Athens, Ga.—The SC State Lady Bulldogs fell to the University of Georgia, 85-48, in a non-conference match-up at the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.  This was the first-of-six straight road games for the Lady Bulldogs.

SC State (2-3) began a little slow allowing Georgia to open the game on a 10-0 run.  Georgia would increase its lead to 16 before a three-pointer by junior Tiara Knotts at the 12:47 mark snapped the scoring run and got SC State on the board.  Georgia continued to press increasing its lead to 19, 36-17, with a little over four minutes remaining in the half.  SC State began to play more aggressive closing first half on a 12-4 run and decreasing the deficit to 11, 29-40, heading into the half.

SC State remained aggressive to start the second half as they capitalized on its first four-of-five opportunities to keep the gap at 11.  Georgia once again picked up its intensity using an 11-0 run with just over 12 minutes remaining to increase its lead to 22, 57-35.  Georgia pushed its lead to 74-40 with a little over five minutes remaining before going on to take the 85-48 victory.

Tiara Knotts and Tracey Flowers led SC State in scoring with 10 points each.  Tiana Hemphill and Paris Alston pulled in five rebounds each in the loss.

Georgia, who had four players in double-figures, was led by Jasmine James with 17 points.  Jasmine Hassell scored 12, Khaalidah Miller had 11 and Erika Ford contributed 10 points in the contest. James and Tamika Willis pulled in five rebounds and Anne Marie Armstrong contributed nine points as Georgia improved to 6-1 on the season.

SC State will open its 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this Saturday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Hampton, Va. to take on the MEAC defending champion Hampton Lady Pirates.  The Lady Bulldogs will then face Norfolk State on Monday, Dec. 5 in a conference matchup and will have non-conference matchups with Winthrop (Dec. 10), University of South Carolina (Dec. 14) and Coastal Carolina (Dec. 18). SC State will return home on Monday, Dec. 19 when they host UNC-Asheville.
