Cue Leads SC State Over Georgia St. 23-13

SC State ends streak against Non-HBCU opponents with victory.

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—Redshirt sophomore quarterback Richard Cue proved to be the missing link for injured Derrick Wiley, throwing for 16-of-30 for 213 yards and also rushing for 56 yards  and two touchdowns to lead SC State to a 23-13 victory over Georgia State Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
       “It was a great win, and we stopped the streak (0-9 against Non-HBCU teams under Pough, 0-12 overall against Non-HBCUs.,” said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. “We faced some adversity but we fought our way out of it until the finish.”
      SC State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal by senior Blake Erickson at the 11:01 mark in the first quarter. Georgia State responded back on two field goals of 23 and 40 by freshman kicker Christian Benvenuto in the second quarter to take a 6-3 advantage.
      Georgia State closed out the first-half with a 6-3 lead over SC State.
      Cue put the Bulldogs ahead 10-6 on a 4-yard touchdown scamper at the 12:26 mark early in the third quarter. Junior running back Donald Russell's 9-yard punch put the Panthers ahead 13-10 with 6:22 left in the third.
       SBN All-American kicker Blake Erickson kicked two key field's goal of 34 and 32 late in the game to put SC State ahead, 16-13 in the fourth quarter. Cue sealed the victory for the Bulldogs on a 1-yard punch with 1:20 left in the game.
      “The field goal we scored after we tied the game 13-13 , and to go up 16-13 was the most important drive, stated Coach Pough. “ But the drive where we got the ball with just over six minutes left and scored was the most impressive of the year.”
       The Bulldogs defense was spearhead by redshirt sophomore linebacker Joe Thomas with 14 tackles and 12 solo, while senior Donovan Richard chipped in 10 along with two interceptions for 31 yards.
       Senior Dominique Ellis added eight, while Christian Thompson and Lataris Douglas each had seven in the victory. Michael Hall led the Panthers with 11 in the loss.
Pough stated, “This team is maturing every game, Cue had a rough start but the key is we never lost confidence in him and he finally got it going.”
       South Carolina State improved to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the MEAC, while Georgia State dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 1-5 on the season
      Next up SC State will host the Rattlers of Florida A&M in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic showdown. The game will be televised on ESPNU with a 10:30 p.m. tape delay.
